Your Community Event Is Doing More Than You Think

Summer festivals, concerts, farmers’ markets, and community celebrations may seem like simple, seasonal amenities that bring residents together for a few enjoyable weekends. But do these events have a broader impact on how people view their community? Long-term national resident sentiment data suggests they do.

Analysis of resident satisfaction data from communities across the country in 2025 reveals a clear pattern: communities that score highest on events and festivals satisfaction also score highest across several other key measures. Communities in the top third for events satisfaction averaged 70 out of 100 on perceived economic health and 79 out of 100 on likelihood to recommend their community. This is compared to just 32 and 39 out of 100, respectively, among communities in the bottom third. Community image followed the same pattern: 79 out of 100 for high-scoring communities versus 43 out of 100 for low-scoring ones.

While these findings do not prove that community events directly cause stronger economic conditions or a better community image, they do demonstrate a consistent association. Communities that deliver positive event experiences tend to be viewed more favorably across several key measures that matter to residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

For local leaders, the value of community events is not measured solely by attendance. It is also reflected in how those experiences shape perceptions of economic health, community image, and overall quality of life. That's where resident feedback becomes essential. By measuring satisfaction with local events alongside other key indicators, local governments can better understand which investments are making the greatest impact. Cobalt Community Research helps communities benchmark these measures against peer jurisdictions, giving local leaders a clearer understanding of how resident experiences influence broader perceptions of their community.

7 Ways to Get More Out of Your Community Events

  1. Know who you're inviting. Instead of aiming at "everyone," target specific groups, like young families, outdoor enthusiasts, or history buffs, with messaging built for them. Cobalt's visitor and resident data can help identify who's actually showing up and who else you could be reaching.
  2. Give people a reason they can't get elsewhere. A once-a-year menu, a rare walking tour, a local maker's market: the draw should be something attendees can't replicate at home.
  3. Build in a hook. Give people something specific to talk about and share, like a themed crawl, a standout installation, or a signature quirky feature.
  4. Connect the dots. Partner with your Chamber of Commerce or tourism board to point attendees toward nearby shops, sites, and businesses, and turn one event into a full day.
  5. Capture the moment, not just the memory. Collect emails or contact info at check-in so you can invite attendees back for what's next.
  6. Make the next step obvious. QR codes on signage linking straight to lodging, dining, or ticket pages remove the guesswork.
